Bauhaus is one of the most interesting architectural styles. Its basis is the desire to combine art with an industrial context.

It can be said that Bauhaus strives to create beauty through practical and utilitarian designs, where form follows functionality. Many people choose to build a house in this style. Learn more about it from our article!

What exactly is the Bauhaus?

Bauhaus was a school of design, architecture and applied arts, which was founded in Weimar by German architect Walter Gropius. It was also active in places like Dessau and Berlin. It was closed by the Nazi regime in 1933.

It was a highly influential school that defined an era and helped shape modern art, design and architecture. The name itself – Bauhaus, loosely translated from German means “House of Construction.” Popular buildings that fit the style’s tenets include:

  • Granary in Dessau;
  • Steel House in Dessau;
  • Barcelona Pavilion in Barcelona.

Bauhaus style house. The main principles of the style

21 December 2022

In order for a designed house to fit into the Bauhaus style, it must meet the assumptions of the style. Based on this, it will be possible to create a property characterized by simple, geometric shapes with few decorative details. Let’s take a closer look at the main principles of the style.

Art and architecture in harmony with craftsmanship

Among the assumptions of the Bauhaus is that art and architecture should lead back to craftsmanship. Gropius wanted to create a style that combined architecture, fine arts and the just-mentioned craftsmanship. He took the philosophy of Gesamtkunstwerk, “total artwork,” and reformulated it into “Total Design,” intending to convey the famous idea through a “new guild of craftsmen” to all aspects of modern life.

Art, design and mass production

Architects creating in the Bauhaus movement, in accordance with the principle of combining art and craftsmanship, adopted modern technologies, thus combining art and design with mass production. According to the principles of the style, function is to follow form. Thus, the house is not only to look good, but above all to serve its purpose perfectly.

When creating a house in the Bauhaus style, one must also opt for simplicity and minimalism. This is what the aesthetics of the style are based on – simplicity, clarity, balanced visual composition, rationality, as well as functionality.

Simple materials and modernity

The style also imposes certain conditions on the materials used. They are to reflect the Bauhaus. For this reason, properties built in this style are put up with basic usable materials, such as steel, concrete and glass in an unaltered and exposed form.

Bauhaus also goes with the times. It incorporates continuous development and innovation. The Bauhaus school advocated constant experimentation and evolution of its architects and designers, while urging them to constantly come up with new ideas with current technologies and materials.

House in the Bauhaus trend – stylish design

Bauhaus is one of the most interesting architectural styles. Properties created in accordance with this trend are found all over the world. Bauhaus designs are defined by modest ornaments or their complete absence, the use of clean lines, as well as smooth surfaces and geometric shapes. Placing a house just in this style will certainly be a good decision.
